Church Development Institute

CDI’s aim is to equip leaders to facilitate a process of transformation, and to build up the capacities and skills of leaders through self awareness of one’s personal impact on others and the organization; to increase knowledge of theories, methods and processes as a way to assess and understand the behavior and development of the congregation; and to give a safe learning environment where one can practice skills in facilitation, feedback, listening and presenting.

Each program consists of two cycles and each cycle consists of 4 weekend training sessions – A total of 8 weekend training sessions. As all of the graduates agree that the benefit is multiplied when a team from a congregation takes part together, preference is given to congregation teams and individuals must have the permission of the Director of Leadership Ministries staff to register as an individual.


Honey Creek





At Honey Creek sessions run from 12 noon Friday through 3 PM Saturday. Dinner on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday are included in the fee charged by Honey Creek.

A location in Augusta has not been finalized for the 2018-2019 cycle. In the past sessions were hosted by one of the local churches. Dinner is brought in on Friday night.

Congregational teams are strongly recommended. If you would like to register as an individual you may, but please contact the Rev. Walter Hobgood, Director of Leadership Ministries before doing so. Registration preference will be given to teams and total registrants are limited to 40, including those continuing in their second year of the training.

Each member of a parish team is registered as an individual participant. Each person is responsible for his or her own full participation in all eight weekends and completion of assignments and readings.

The assumption of the program is that every one is registering for the whole program (both cycles) i.e., 110 hours of workshop; worship with the learning community; required readings and other assignments; and planning, implementing and reporting on congregational development projects. Each will sign a Learning Agreement with CDI.  One requirement is to have e-mail, with a capacity to receive attachments in Word and PDF, and access to the web to participate in the program.

The CDI tuition covers the cost of the training sessions, main textbook, and manual. Each participant will need to register with and pay Honey Creek separately for room and board. The main textbook will be mailed to each participant after registration. Some other books will need to be purchased – CDI Book List  (Do NOT purchase these books in advance as you will be told when you need each. Participants have found this list not as daunting as it first seems. It is here for information only).

For a team of four the fee is $ 225 per cycle (due with registration)
For a team of three the fee is $ 200 per cycle (due with registration)
For a team of two the fee is $ 175 per cycle (due with registration)
For an individual the fee is $125 per cycle (due with registration)
